Here's a fact that surprises many commercial operators: if your municipal water supply uses chloramines for disinfection (and most major cities now do), standard activated carbon filters provide almost no protection. Chlorine? Easy. Carbon catches it efficiently. But chloramines—the combination of chlorine and ammonia that water utilities prefer for its stability—pass straight through.
Why does this matter? Chloramines are effective disinfectants, which is exactly why they persist through your plumbing. They're still actively killing microorganisms when they reach your ionizer. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) reacts with chloramines on contact, instantly converting them into harmless chloride ions and organic nitrogen compounds. What enters the filter as chloramine exits as compounds your body processes naturally.
